All the scans done at SFMGC involve looking at the brain, however, patients who are at high-risk for neurological problems like – previous history of developmental delay in parent/sibling/family, mother on anti-epileptic medications, diabetes, malformation in any other organ picked up during the scan, suspicion of intracranial abnormality on the outside scan (ventriculomegaly Blake’s pouch cyst, small vermis/corpus callosum, suspicion of abnormal sulcation) – need a dedicated fetal neurosonogram. These scans are more informative at certain gestational ages - 14 – 17 weeks, 22 – 24 weeks, and 30 – 32 weeks. However, in the event of suspicion of abnormality, it can be performed at any gestational age. It is important to understand that the brain is a developing organ throughout pregnancy and even after birth, hence, in certain situations, serial follow-up throughout pregnancy is important to be reassured of the normality. A fetal MRI may also be suggested depending on the ultrasound findings.
