In our own clinical practice, as well as through referrals from colleagues, we have observed that Indian sonographers deal with many rare cases. This could be due to very high population density, heterogenous communities, consanguinity in some of them and availability of ultrasound services in the private sector up to tier three towns.
However, invasive testing and perinatal autopsy rates are low for various reasons. Therefore these rare cases are never published and go unnoticed. However, there is a lot to learn from these cases.
Fetal imaging is the first step for understanding the pathophysiology of rare disorders. Through this platform, we bring forward cutting edge ultrasound images of rare cases, their differential diagnosis, and a guide to approaching the work-up if affronted with a similar clinical practice.
These cases also demonstrate a long-felt need for dedicated perinatal pathologists in all corners of the country. We are fortunate to be associated with Dr. Hima Bindu Nalluri, one of the best fetal anatomists in the country, and to get her input on various cases. Lack of good pathological diagnosis leaves a big gap in the understanding even when the parents agree to an autopsy. We urge young pathologists/ anatomists in India to take up perinatal pathology in big numbers and fill up this lacuna.
